EMSL Maintains National Capabilities and Certifications for Asbestos in Drinking Water

As some laboratories close their doors or limit asbestos services, EMSL continues to expand and service the asbestos market.

Municipalities and the bottled water and beverage industries has been increasingly turning to EMSL Analytical and their 27 year history of providing asbestos analyses as other laboratories close their doors or limit asbestos services. The recent announcement that a well known competing environmental laboratory was closing some of its facilities has kept the staff at EMSL busy fielding phone calls and analyzing asbestos samples from drinking water.

Asbestos in drinking water can come from numerous sources. In some areas asbestos can be found in ground and well water. In other areas the drinking water supply travels through asbestos-cement pipes. Corrosion and abrasion can free fibers from the walls of these pipes, which are then carried by the water to your tap.

EPA method 100.2 is the EPA’s Asbestos in Drinking Water standard method. The EPA requires regular testing for the presence of asbestos fibers in tap water and has set a MCL (maximum contaminant level) of 7 million asbestos fibers longer than 10 microns per Liter for drinking water.

Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) is used for the determination of asbestos fibers in water. Fibers detected are identified with the aid of Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis (EDXA) and Selected Area Electron Diffraction (SAED)

“We have witnessed a dramatic increase in asbestos calls at many of our 30 plus facilities nationwide,” reported Chris Nardozzi from EMSL Analytical. “As other competing laboratories have been forced to close their doors, EMSL has been aggressively opening new facilities to service these customers with the most advanced laboratory techniques available,” Nardozzi continued.

EMSL provides asbestos analysis for both potable and non potable water including drinking water, ground water and wastewater. For more information on asbestos testing services and sampling products provided by EMSL please call (800) 220-3675, visit www.emsl.com or email cnardozzi@emsl.com.
