Barry George found Not Guilty of Jill Dando Murder

In a dramatic end to a controversial murder case, Barry George has been found not guilty in his retrial for the murder of television presenter Jill Dando.


Barry George was originally convicted of the murder of Jill Dando in 2001 based on forensic evidence that he had a speck of gunshot residue on his clothing from the same gun which was used to murder Ms. Dando.

George’s solicitor, Jeremy Moore of Carter Moore Solicitors in Manchester, took over the case in 2005 after the failure of George’s first appeal. In 2007 the Court of Appeal quashed the original conviction after Mr. Moore successfully argued in favour of a retrial, providing proof that the forensic evidence against George was flawed and should have been disallowed in the original murder trial.

The retrial began on 3rd June, 2008, and the prosecution argued that character evidence against George showed that he was a likely suspect for the murder of Jill Dando. Without forensic proof linking him to the crime and evidence presented by the defence that he was not capable of planning the crime, the jury had no choice but to overturn the original conviction in a verdict given on 1st August, 2008, after a two-month-long retrial.

Mr Moore said, “Mr. George is relieved to finally have a happy ending to this horrible chapter in his life. He has spent eight years in prison as an innocent man while the real murderer has walked free. Thankfully the appeal system has worked by allowing him to redeem his good name. I can only hope that the police catch the person responsible for Ms. Dando’s murder so her family can finally have closure.”
