Sorrento Networks Plans to Enter IBM GDPS Qualification Program

DENVER—Aug. 5, 2008—Sorrento Networks today announced that it intends to enter into a test plan agreement with IBM to certify its optical WDM solutions as interoperable in IBM Geographically Dispersed Parallel Sysplex (GDPS) environments. To initiate the process, Sorrento has obtained licensed IBM patents, intellectual property and know-how related to the GDPS architecture.

The GDPS qualification testing of Sorrento’s GigaMux and GigaEdge products is planned to include all aspects of a GDPS environment, including functionality, recovery and performance measurements. It will be carried out at the IBM Vendor Solutions Connectivity Lab in Poughkeepsie, New York.

“For Sorrento, successfully completing the IBM System z™ GDPS qualification program will be a strong proof-point for the performance of our WDM products in real-world environments,” said Jim Nevelle, CEO of Sorrento Networks. “Meanwhile, the qualification will open up new doors for our partners and customers by enabling them to offer IBM-certified solutions that incorporate our cost-effective WDM technology.”

Sorrento’s entry into the GDPS qualification program grants the company access to proprietary IBM protocols and applications used in a GDPS environment, as well as to technical information pertaining to future IBM releases and to GDPS architecture changes. Successful completion of the program will verify that Sorrento’s products are interoperable within a GDPS for highly effective business continuity and disaster recovery over distances, regardless of bandwidth requirements.

GDPS Explained
GDPS is a multi-site solution that is designed to provide the capability to manage remote copy configuration and storage subsystems, automate Parallel Sysplex operational tasks, and perform failure recovery from a single point of control, thereby improving application availability. IBM only supports WDM products that are qualified by System z for use in GDPS/PPRC, GDPS/Global Mirror, and GDPS/XRC two-site solutions, as well as in GDPS Metro/z/OS Global Mirror, and GDPS Metro/Global Mirror three-site solutions. Achieved through sharing and parallel processing, IBM’s parallel sysplex technology extends performance to billions of instructions per second.
