Maryland Residents to Face Fewer Mold Scams in the Future

New law goes into effect soon with mandates for mold remediators.

October 1st of this year means contractors providing residential mold remediation services in the state of Maryland will have to meet new requirements that are being phased in through 2010. The state’s new requirements will include contractor insurance for mold remediation, licensing of companies through the Home Improvement Commission and certification of workers/supervisors to qualify for licensing. Maryland will not be creating a new certification program or licensing exam, instead choosing to rely upon the existing American IAQ Council certifications or equivalent programs.

The IAQ Council was chosen due to the fact that it is the only industry certifying body that is completely independent of training providers and industry trade associations. The new law is expected to dramatically reduce fly by night mold remediation providers that are not qualified to perform this important task in people’s homes.

One of the companies that has been busy training individual industry professionals to be in a position to take the IAQ Council certification exams is the IAQ Training Institute from neighboring Pennsylvania. Joseph Hughes, the President of the IAQ Training Institute, reports that he has been busy fielding calls by Maryland remediators preparing to meet the new licensing requirements.

Meanwhile EMSL Analytical, a nationwide indoor air quality testing laboratory, with an office in Beltsville, Maryland has also seen an increase in calls from the general public and industry professionals inquiring about the new law.

“We have witnessed a dramatic increase in calls at the Beltsville laboratory,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President at EMSL Analytical. “The new law should help protect consumers and I think there is a good chance you will see additional states follow Maryland’s lead in the near future,” Frasca continued.
