Amsterdam, December 19, 2005 – The UK Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) and Elsevier, part of the Reed Elsevier Group, today announced the conclusion of a new agreement as part of NESLi2, the national electronic journals initiative for the higher education and research communities in the United Kingdom.

The new two-year agreement, which begins in January 2006, provides the framework under which the UK’s universities and research communities will have electronic access to Elsevier’s scientific, technical and medical journals through the ScienceDirect platform. These include many of the most highly ranked and important journals in their respective fields.

Lorraine Estelle, JISC Collections Team Manager, said: “NESLi2 is the UK’s national initiative for the licensing of electronic journals on behalf of the higher and further education and research communities and provides an efficient, cost effective way to negotiate and disseminate offers to these communities. The JISC is delighted to have reached a NESLi2 agreement with Elsevier for its collection of electronic journals. The agreement is based on the NESLi2 Licence for Journals which ensures a consistent approach to access and use of these journals to allow teachers, learners and researchers to use them to their fullest potential in support of their activities.”

“We are very pleased to come to this agreement with JISC and to support the UK higher education and research community,” commented Frank Vrancken Peeters, Global Sales Director, Elsevier Science & Technology, “JISC’s mission to enhance learning, teaching and research in the UK will be bolstered through the continued access to highly valued, peer-reviewed scientific and medical research content through ScienceDirect.”

The negotiations were handled by Content Complete Ltd on behalf of JISC.
