The Johns Hopkins Hospital Earns National Recognition For Nursing Excellence

The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) has awarded The Johns Hopkins Hospital its prestigious Magnet Recognition status for excellence in nursing services.

The Magnet Recognition Program recognizes quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in nursing practice. Applicants undergo an extensive evaluation, and those who are awarded Magnet status must maintain rigorous standards as part of the four-year designation. The Johns Hopkins Hospital first gained Magnet status in 2003 and is just one of two hospitals in Maryland to do so.

“This great honor reflects the professionalism of all of our nurses and their absolute dedication to maintaining the highest standards of care to our patients,” says Karen Haller, Ph.D, R.N., vice president of nursing and patient care services and associate dean for clinical affairs for the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. “What also distinguishes our nurses, beyond their exemplary professionalism and expertise, is the compassion that infuses the care given to our patients.”

According to the ANCC, the leading nursing credentialing organization in the United States, Magnet designation is widely accepted as a benchmark that can be used to measure the quality of patient care. When U.S. News & World Report determines its annual rankings of “America’s Best Hospitals,” being a Magnet facility contributes to the total score for quality of inpatient care.

Beyond the prestige of obtaining Magnet status, Haller notes that the designation also has meaning for patients. “It assures our patients that we have an excellent nursing service, in the top 5 percent nationally,” she says. “For the nurses who work here, it affirms the value of their practice.”
