Fostering the creation of “Fiber Nations” by gathering public and private stakeholders

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, July 2008 - Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that, as a leading supplier of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) solutions, it will actively participate to the FTTH Council APAC’s annual conference and exhibition, taking place in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) on July 23rd & 24th. In the framework of this event, Alcatel-Lucent will also kick off the official distribution of its “Breaking the Barriers” publication in the APAC market.

Alcatel-Lucent’s leadership in FTTH has recently been illustrated by the Lincoln County Telephone System (US) and Neuf Cegetel (France) GPON customer wins. Moreover, Alcatel-Lucent has a comprehensive program to foster the creation of so-called “Fiber Nations” by gathering public and private stakeholders, engaging them in a constructive debate and pro-actively sharing best practices. Building on this effort, Alcatel-Lucent has been invited by the FTTH Council APAC to present its views on the implementation and evolution of next-generation FTTH networks.

Concretely, Alcatel-Lucent will be participating to four conference sessions –

* Sponsored Studies by the FTTH Council AP – Wednesday, July 23rd from 11h45 till 12h30, chaired by Mr Benjamin Reboul – Director, APAC FTTx Business & Product Strategy.
* Governmental and Regulatory Topics – Wednesday, July 23rd from 14h00 till 15h30, moderated by Mr Stefan Keller-Tuberg – Solution Architect, CTO Office Australia & North Asia.
* Next-Generation FTTH Networks – Thursday, July 24th from 14h00 till 15h30, chaired by Mr Cheng Jin – Network & Technology, CTO Office APAC.
* Next-Generation FTTH Networks: The Current & Future Landscape of Broadband Access – Thursday, July 24th from 14h00 till 15h30, presented by Mr Jean-Pierre Lartigue – Vice President, Marketing & Communications, Fixed Access business.

At its booth (# 36), Alcatel-Lucent will showcase how customers can engage in a “Fiber to the Most Economical Point” strategy, by combining the right access technology (xDSL, GPON, P2P) and topologies (FTTN, FTTB, FTTH) to bring the highest bandwidth to every subscriber in the most cost-effective way.

Alcatel-Lucent will highlight how its Intelligent Services Access Manager (ISAM) family allows service providers (telecom operators, municipalities as well as utility companies) to actively participate to the creation of a “Fiber Nation”. Different strategies will be examined, showing how GPON, VDSL2 and P2P fiber can smoothly complement one another to provide a wide range of services (legacy voice, HD IPTV, mobile backhaul, etc.)

Building on this discussion, Alcatel-Lucent will begin the APAC distribution of its “Breaking the Barriers” publication - the thoughtleading reference work on the transformation of fixed broadband access networks. “Breaking the Barriers” highlights a wide range of FTTx-related topics – from a visionary, a strategic and a policy and regulatory perspective – and includes articles from major telecom operators, Industry Analysts, government officials as well as Alcatel-Lucent technology experts.

Alcatel-Lucent is engaged in over 80 FTTx projects worldwide, over 60 of which are with GPON. Leading service providers like Verizon, France Telecom, Hanaro Telecom and Hong Kong Broadband Network Limited have adopted Alcatel-Lucent’s GPON solution. Alcatel-Lucent’s GPON has also been selected by utility companies (a.o. NRGi Fibernet, Jönköping Energi, Bristol Virginia Utilities), municipalities (a.o. Arvidsjaur, Tidaholm [Sweden]), and regions such as Asturias (Spain). Alcatel-Lucent’s most recent GPON wins include Lincoln County Telephone System (US) and Neuf Cegetel (France). Alcatel-Lucent recently signed a number of contracts to also deploy point-to-point (P2P) fiber networks (Denmark’s Sydfyns Intranet and Switzerland’s ewz).
