Snapped Stiletto Leads to £7,000 Accident Compensation Claim

In a decision that could have a significant impact on accident compensation claims brought by people who have been injured by faulty products, a court in Manchester has awarded £7,200 compensation to a woman who broke her ankle after the shoes she was wearing on a night out collapsed. The case, which was heard yesterday at Manchester county court, could set a precedent which would benefit the hundreds of women who fall over when the heels of their shoes break unexpectedly.

The heel on Sophie King’s £35 stiletto broke on a night out with friends in Manchester city centre back in 2004, sending her flying, which meant she broke her ankle and later needed an operation on her injured leg. Her accident was the first time 20 year old Sophie had worn the black strappy shoes with their two and a half inch heels. The broken ankle needed an operation and Sophie’s leg had to be set in plaster afterwards, which meant she was unable to play sport and had to quit her holiday waitressing job.

When speaking to the press after the court case, Sophie said: “As I was walking down the tram platform the shoe snapped and I went over on it. It was really painful but I didn`t want to ruin the night for everyone so we went on to the first bar. I began to feel better after a few drinks. But the next thing I knew I`d passed out and was in the back of an ambulance. I`m 5ft 9ins and hardly ever wear them anyway so it was really annoying. Now I just stick to chunky heels if I`m wearing them at all. I know so many people who have gone over in their heels. It wouldn`t surprise me if more people came forward.”
