CN 5060 implemented across North America and Europe to bring rapidly expanding service provider MPLS support, operational ease and ability to introduce new IP/Ethernet services
Linthicum, MD
Ciena® Corporation (NASDAQ: CIEN), the network specialist, today announced that Los Angeles-based Mzima Networks, the world’s leading high-performance network service provider, has implemented Ciena’s CN 5060™ Multiservice Carrier Ethernet Platform across its North American and European networks. Mzima deployed the CN 5060 to support a new Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) infrastructure that will enable it to rapidly introduce new, high-bandwidth services, significantly increase service reliability and performance monitoring, and facilitate expansion into new markets.

Mzima delivers optimized Internet connectivity and Ethernet transport via its performance-driven NetAlive™ network architecture. Mzima specializes in high-bandwidth applications by leveraging leading 10-Gigabit Ethernet technologies. A key piece of Ciena’s FlexSelect™ Architecture, the CN 5060 enables Mzima to cost-effectively transition its metro and edge aggregation networks to an optimized IP and Ethernet service delivery infrastructure. The platform is Carrier Ethernet certified by the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) for its MEF 9 and MEF 14 certifications.

“As we looked to upgrade our global network to address continued growth and new service opportunities, our first step was to add a dedicated MPLS infrastructure separate from our IP backbone. The Ciena CN 5060 gives us the flexibility to meet customer demands, improve operational efficiency and cost-effectively fulfill our expansion plans,” said Grant Kirkwood, CTO of Mzima. “Ciena’s CN 5060 enables us to achieve these goals by creating a service-driven, anything-over-Ethernet network edge featuring advanced Ethernet interworking and MPLS functionality combined with industry-leading reliability.”

With the deployment of Ciena’s CN 5060, Mzima has implemented a MPLS network with robust operational support, administration, maintenance and provisioning capabilities through Ciena’s ON-Center® Data Edge Manager. The feature-rich and highly-reliable solution also offers more advanced capabilities for performance monitoring, establishing service level agreements and quality of service assurances for Layer 2 services. Additionally, Mzima selected the CN 5060 for its ability to facilitate the introduction of new services and market expansion, with Ciena’s extensive product line providing the opportunity to continually build-upon their network infrastructure through a single, trusted vendor.

“Mzima realized that in order to continue their success they needed a MPLS infrastructure based upon reliable, cost-effective technology with the flexibility and functionality to offer multiple services today and in the future,” said Mike Aquino, senior vice president of worldwide sales at Ciena. “In Ciena, they found a partner committed to solving their immediate needs, and a platform that would allow for future network and market expansion and an increased ability to rapidly bring new, emerging services to customers.”
