New Gas-Fired Power Plant In Spain To Feature GE Combined-Cycle Technology

Project Will Help Meet Region’s Environmental Goals

MILAN, ITALY - June 2008 : – Expanding the presence of its large combined-cycle technology in Spain, GE Energy will supply a turnkey power station to Endesa Generación, S.A. that will add 840 megawatts of capacity to the country’s electricity grid. This output will be largely used by Barcelona, the ca pital of Catalonia and the city that leads Spain in electricity consumption.

Located in Sant Adriá del Besós, province of Barcelona, Spain, the new Besós 5 power station will be based on one GE 209FB combined-cycle system and is scheduled to enter commercial operation in the first quarter of 2010.

Featuring high efficiency and low emissions to meet the stringent environmental conditions in the area, the new Besós 5 combined-cycle plant will operate on natural gas and will replace the old Besós 1 and Besós 2 conventional liquid fuel-fired power plants currently being dismantled. This will lead to a reduction of CO2, as part of Endesa’s environmental plan for the region.

“With this contract, Endesa will acquire its third and fourth 9FB gas turbines from GE an d its 14th and 15th F-technology machines, demonstrating the company’s faith in this technology,” said Ricardo Cordoba, GE Energy’s president for Western Europe and North Africa. “The Frame 9FB is among the world’s most advanced, air-cooled 50-hertz gas turbines and is the latest evolutionary step in GE’s F technology, which has surpassed 20 million hours of commercial service.”

The GE STAG 209FB multi-shaft combined-cycle system will include two Frame 9FB gas turbines, three 330H generators, one 209D steam turbine, two heat recovery steam generators and an integrated control system. The scope of GE’s contract also includes engineering, balance-of-plant equipment, site civil work, equipment installation, erection, commissioning and training activities.
