The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® today announced an extension of its collaboration with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) on a safe listening public education campaign entitled: “America: Tuned In Today…But Tuned Out Tomorrow?” www.listentoyourbuds.org.

“CEA has promoted safe listening and effective hearing loss prevention for a number of years. Portable entertainment devices are among the most popular consumer electronics products for all age groups. Safe use of these devices is essential to their continued enjoyment,” said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of CEA. “We’re pleased to continue to work with ASHA and broaden the scope of our consumer outreach with this important message.”

CEA recommends a few simple steps for all consumers when using personal audio devices. First, consumers should set their volume control at a low setting and slowly increase the sound until they can hear it comfortably and clearly, without distortion. Once they have established a comfortable sound level, set the dial and leave it there. Headphones or earphones that are noise-canceling or sound-isolating can also help, so that consumers don’t have to raise the volume to compete with outside noises.

ASHA is the national professional, scientific, and credentialing association for more than 130,000 speech-language pathologists, audiologists, and speech and hearing scientists. ASHA’s “America: Tuned In” campaign has been honored for two straight years by the American Society of Association Executives with an Associations Advance America award in recognition of the nationwide impact of the campaign.
