Offers enterprises end-to-end visibility and control of optical networks
Linthicum, MD
Ciena® Corporation (NASDAQ: CIEN), the network specialist, today announced that its CN 4200® FlexSelect™ Advanced Services Platform has been integrated into EMC® Smarts® Service Assurance Manager, an integral part of EMC Smarts management suite. This direct network element integration will simplify infrastructure management for customers using Ciena’s CN 4200 and EMC Smarts solutions, providing end-to-end visibility for efficient and cost-effective network services management.

The management of optical networks has become very complex and costly for enterprises. Integration of Ciena’s CN 4200 into Smarts Service Assurance Manager offers enterprises expanded visibility across both the optical and storage domains, as well as rapid, automated impact analysis to understand how network changes affect the delivery of services. With Smarts, enterprises can proactively manage and monitor a CN 4200 network environment, speed their time-to-repair and maximize IT availability before business services are affected. This is a unique solution available only with Ciena as its CN 4200 is the only WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) platform integrated with Smarts at the network element level.

“EMC Smarts solutions provide automated discovery and analytics so enterprises can proactively identify service degradations or outage conditions and take action before business services are impacted,” said Bob Quillin, EMC’s senior director of product marketing, resource management software. “The result is a highly-efficient management system that gives IT personnel the edge they need to help ensure availability across data centers much more easily and cost-effectively and in conjunction with their other IT domains.”

“Optical networks are the foundation to all wide-area network technologies, making the assurance of these networks critical in maintaining customer SLAs and ensuring that IT operations and services are maintained,” said Lynne Milton, senior director, global storage partners, at Ciena. “This integration offers our enterprise customers expanded visibility across both the optical and storage domains of their IT infrastructure, providing them secure control over their complex networks.”

Ciena’s CN 4200’s carrier-grade functionality and proven interoperability with mainstream storage environments are easily translatable to enterprise environments that command support for high-end applications such as business continuity, disaster recovery and mirroring across the WAN. Ciena’s transport-optimized approach allows enterprises to easily transition to new technologies and services as dictated by market demands.

CN 4200 is available through the EMC Select Program, and is qualified by all major storage vendors. Ciena is a member of the Storage Networking Industry Association and Wall Street Technology Association, and its equipment is helping a variety of leading enterprises to create customized bandwidth to fit connectivity requirements for emerging applications, data replication and legacy traffic.
