BelAir Networks Puts Pedal to the Metal with High-Speed Wireless for the Indy Racing League™
High-Speed, Flexible Multi-Radio Broadband Mesh Network Powers IRL Races in the US
Kanata, Ontario, May 2008 - With cars accelerating from zero to 100 in less than three seconds, employees of the Indy Racing League™ (IRL) appreciate the need for speed and are deploying a high-performance wireless mesh network from BelAir Networks to support the communications requirements of race staff at their events.
In 2008, the IRL-sanctioned IndyCar Series will host sixteen races across the U.S. and in Japan, featuring the fastest closed-course racing cars in the world. BelAir Networks powerful broadband mesh network equipment will support the real-time transmission of race-related data and voice communications at the fifteen U.S. IndyCar Series races, plus an additional 16 events that comprise the Firestone Indy Lights Series, the IRL’s driver development series.
Each course ranges in size and shape from standard ovals to complex street courses that weave between buildings and city parks -- adding excitement and complexity to each event. BelAir Networks wireless nodes are being deployed at the races in various configurations to meet the challenges of the different terrains. The first IndyCar Series race of the 2008 season took place at the Homestead Miami Speedway on March 29th and the final race will take place on September 7th at the Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois.
“Using BelAir Networks nodes, each track and course will have convenient and cost-effective high-performance wireless connectivity. Competing solutions required more wiring, power, labor and time to deploy. BelAir Networks infrastructure is installed and fully operational in a matter of hours,” said Chuck Ferguson, Senior Director of IS and Telecommunications, Indianapolis Motor Speedway. “After performing our due diligence, it was clear that only BelAir Networks could meet our network demands with its unique multi-radio offering. The network establishes multiple point to point connections with very high bandwidth and is flexible, fast and relatively easy to install.”
The IRL deploys the high-speed wireless broadband network products from BelAir Networks to support multiple applications including enterprise VoIP and high-speed data. Employees communicate work and race-related information such as race times and scoring across the venue and with co-workers at the corporate headquarters in Indianapolis.
“IRL sanctions some of the fastest, most prestigious events in racing today and to match that high level of professionalism, agility and speed we turned to BelAir Networks to provide the necessary capacity and flexibility,” stated Jon Koskey, Director of Timing and Scoring, Indy Racing League. “Every second counts on the racetrack and with BelAir’s high-speed wireless network, we get great voice and data communications to support these celebrated events.”
Clocking in at speeds above 220 MPH, cars travel the length of a football field in approximately nine-tenths of a second. BelAir Networks mesh network solutions also brings a higher level of performance to wireless communications by delivering industry-leading speed and flexibility, outperforming the IRL’s previous fixed wire line solution.
“The Indy Racing League is synonymous with speed and we’re excited to be supporting the races where the best and fastest compete,” said Dave Park, Vice President of Product Marketing, BelAir Networks. “We’re proud to work with a world leader in racing to build high-speed wireless broadband networks deployable in hours that can sustain the demands of multiple concurrent applications.”
