BCL Legal in Birmingham & Bristol Joined by Hudson Trio

Leading legal recruitment agency BCL Legal meant it when they said back in 2003 that they were going to become the leading legal recruitment business outside of London. Having started so successfully in Manchester five years ago, the business now recruits for law firms and legal departments in industry, commerce and public sector in Yorkshire and the North East, Birmingham, Bristol and Thames Valley. Where next? James Batt, Managing Director said “we are going to consolidate what we have worked hard to develop in the North and ensure we maintain the high standards we have set whilst continuing to develop our presence in the Midlands and South”.

Having recruited Tom Crampton, now a manager of BCL Legal, back in 2005, from Hudson Legal, a stream of experienced recruiters from international recruitment giants have followed in his footsteps. Ruth Taylor joined from Hudson in 2007 to work with Mark Levine placing lawyers within in-house legal departments in the North West. Also in 2007 Mary Nowell and Liz Lawson joined from multi-sector recruiter and global organisation Michael Page. More recently James Brewster, Daniel Hogan and Paul Duffy have also left Hudson. James has become the head of Private Practice and Associate Director in the Midlands and South West, Senior Consultants Daniel Hogan and Paul Duffy will be advising private practices in the South and Birmingham respectively. When asked why James Brewster had chosen BCL Legal he said “every person at BCL Legal is a stakeholder in the business, this means that everyone is recruited because they share the same values and have the same goals. It is a hugely ambitious business and the energy is infectious. We are looking to recruit similarly ambitious individuals to the Midlands and Southern teams and the opportunities here are fantastic”.

When asked whether they would eventually consider the bright lights of the City, Director Vicky Clark said “whilst we are very ambitious and won’t rest on our laurels we are dedicated to becoming the leading legal recruitment business in the country, inevitably that means going into London at some stage but we’ll make sure we have a strong foothold in the regions first. We are regularly asked by our clients to help them in London but we don’t want to spread ourselves too thinly and let them down”. At a time when many of the legal recruitment businesses in London are venturing into Europe, the Middle East, India and China, BCL Legal seems to be content to conquer the UK but most importantly, to be known for the legal consultancy of choice for clients and candidate lawyers alike.
