Public asthma screening to be held May 10

ANN ARBOR, Mich – Do you experience shortness of breath, chest tightness, or wheezing and want to know if it is asthma? Have you already been diagnosed with asthma and want to learn more about it? Learn the facts and get your questions answered by attending the Asthma Screening and Education Day at the Ann Arbor District Library on Saturday, May 10.

In partnership with the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, specialists from the University of Michigan Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology will host this free public screening and education event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Visitors will have the opportunity to take a simple breathing test and fill out a short questionnaire in order to assess whether they have asthma or not. U-M asthma specialists will also offer brief presentations and be available to discuss issues related to asthma, such as non-medicine treatment options, allergy avoidance measures, and medication used to treat asthma. Lung-function tests and complimentary peak flow meters will also be available.

“This is an opportunity for those who think they may have asthma and those who know they have asthma to learn how to take good control of their health,” explains Alan Baptist, M.D., clinical instructor in internal medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School. “They can learn about a variety of topics, ranging from the basic facts and symptoms to having their more specific questions answered.”

The U-M Asthma Program is a new clinic offered as part of the U-M Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. With its state-of-the art pulmonary and rhinoscopy suites, the center takes a multidisciplinary approach to providing optimal care by offering a variety of programs and services, including asthma diagnosis and severity assessment, immunotherapy options, and opportunities for social work and home visiting nurse support.
