EPA and Dell To Recycle Electronic Equipment Destroyed by Hurricane Katrina

( Washington , D.C. - Dec. 1, 2005 ) EPA and Dell Inc. are teaming up to increase collection and safe recycling of computers and other electronic equipment destroyed by the effects of Hurricane Katrina. On Sat., Dec. 3, consumers in the New Orleans region can drop off any brand of old or unwanted computer equipment, televisions, VCRs, DVD players, radios, and similar electronics to be recycled at a one-day, free electronics recycling event at the area’s Pontchartrain Center.

The public-private partnership includes the Louisiana Department of Environment Quality (LDEQ), Dell, the National Recycling Coalition (NRC), Jefferson Parish, the town of Kenner , the Pontchartrain Center , and EPA. EPA and its partners will evaluate whether this type of event can be an effective part of the region-wide clean up efforts.

“EPA is helping to make sure yesterday’s high-tech gadgets are not becoming tomorrow’s contaminated garbage,” said EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson. “By working with communities to collect and properly dispose of electronic wastes, we are working to protect the health of current and future generations of Gulf Coast residents.”

Dell will accept any make or model of computer and related equipment, including computers, monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards, mice, laptops, and cables. Consumers are asked to remove all data from their computer’s hard drive if possible. EPA will accept other electronic equipment including TVs, VCRs, DVD players, radios, disks, and similar electronics.

Dell is an original partner in EPA’s Plug-In to eCycling partnership. Formed in 2002, the Plug-In To eCycling partnership aims to increase the safe recycling of used electronic products by encouraging private and public sector partners to advertise, promote, or provide actual opportunities to recycle old consumer electronics.
