Alcatel-Lucent to deliver very high-speed network to connect France’s leading higher education institutions and research centers
Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) has been selected by France’s higher education and research community, the Association Réseau Haut Débit du Plateau de Saclay,to deliver a very high-speed network. Connecting leading French engineering and management schools as well as renowned research centers, the turnkey optical network will favor the development of joint research or higher education programs.
The network will build on a 30 Km optical infrastructure already deployed by Alcatel-Lucent in 2006. Operating at 10 Gbit/s and upgradeable to 40 Gbit/s per fiber pair, the network will support the massive capacity needed to facilitate data exchanges between research centers and higher education institutions. The flexible optical transport architecture will enhance the security and redundancy between the connected sites and will make it possible to link additional research centers as needed.
According to Roland Seneor (Ecole Polytechnique) and Jacques Dang (HEC Paris), representing the two leading higher education institutions in engineering and management, who jointly manage the Association, “Alcatel-Lucent has been selected for its unique ability and field proven technology leadership in designing, building and operating a very high speed, flexible and scalable network that enables us to deliver substantial benefits to the higher education and research community.
Alcatel-Lucent will combine cabling, optical and IP networking solutions from its portfolio, with specialized service practices. The Alcatel-Lucent 1696 Metrospan, Alcatel-Lucent 7750 Service Router (SR) and Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch 6850 will secure high-speed optical and IP connectivity to cope with the scientific community’s demand for new Ethernet-based and grid computing applications.

Alcatel-Lucent has field-proven experience in the implementation of Research and Education networks. Projects include GEANT2, the largest Pan-European research network, RENATER in France, a 40 Gbit/s link between the Universities of Stuttgart and Karlsruhe in Germany, using the Alcatel-Lucent 1626 Light Manager, as well as Germany’s VIOLA (Vertically Integrated Optical test bed for Large Applications) with the Alcatel-Lucent 1696 Metrospan.
