The upgraded City+ multiservice system provides telecoms operators with one solution that can manage legacy equipment and carrier-grade Ethernet transport

Milan.- PGT Photonics, a new company within the Pirelli Group which will specialize in second generation photonics and transport systems for metro and access networks, today announced a new release of its City+ CWDM & DWDM Multiservice Platform (Release 1.4) which brings additional functionalities and greater transport flexibility in metro networks.

The enhanced City+ system now supports an even wider range of interfaces and provides optimized solutions for signal grooming and transport. Among the new features introduced: full support of OC-192/STM-64 clients and a new board handling multiple STM-1/4 (OC-3/12). The new release of the platform is now commercially available.

With the explosive growth of bandwidth-intensive services, metro access and metro core networks have become the most critical areas. Pirelli’s scalable City+ CWDM & DWDM Platform, based on pluggable optics, offers the versatility to accommodate all types of datacom and telecom interfaces including SDH/Sonet, GbE, 10 Gbit/s Ethernet, FC, ESCON, and FICON allowing telecoms operators to deliver premium services through the optimization of existing infrastructures and the development of next generation networks.

“The market is asking for a cost-effective metro solution to address both legacy equipment and carrier-grade Ethernet transport,” said Pierluigi Franco, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing -- Systems for PGT Photonics. “With City+ Release 1.4, we are responding with a platform that allows service providers to exploit their existing and new network infrastructures including SDH/Sonet and Ethernet with WDM capacity.” Franco added, “With this new release, we are also facilitating the migration from legacy to next-generation networks.”

City+ CWDM & DWDM Multiservice Platform is Pirelli’s carrier-class subsystem which builds on the success of its City8™ CWDM platform by adding DWDM capabilities able to scale up to a total capacity of 175Gbit/s on a single platform and thus, allows operators to upgrade networks as their business grows.
