Camille Davis-Williams, MD, gynecologist and obstetrician at Emory Crawford Long Hospital (ECLH), and Michael V. Smith, MD, cardiothoracic surgeon at ECLH, have been named co-physicians of the year by the Atlanta Medical Association (AMA).

The AMA is the oldest African-American physician organization in the country. The coveted honor, voted on by peers, is given to physicians for long-time service to the Atlanta community.

Davis-Williams also received a 25-year service award from the AMA.

“It is quite an honor to join an elite roster of dedicated doctors who have served the greater Atlanta community for decades,” says Davis-Williams. “The award helps to signify our mission of providing top-notch, quality care to our patients throughout the years.”

Davis-Williams has been affiliated with Emory University for over 35 years. She entered Oxford College of Emory University in 1971 and completed her BS and MD degrees at Emory. She completed internship and residency training in gynecology and obstetrics at Emory’s School of Medicine. She is a clinical associate professor in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics and serves as associate chief of service for the department at ECLH.

In 1987, Davis-Williams continued her service to the community by establishing Greater Atlanta Woman’s Healthcare, which currently has five health care providers committed to reproductive and gynecological health care of women and girls in the metro Atlanta area.

Smith, who opened Georgia Heart and Lung Associates in 2001, says, “This recognition symbolizes a commitment to the community to provide health care at its finest across metro Atlanta.”

A board certified cardiothoracic surgeon, Smith’s expertise is open-heart surgery, minimally invasive heart bypass surgery and lung cancer surgery. A graduate of the University of Georgia and the Medical College of Georgia, he completed surgical training at the University of Kentucky, Mount Sinai School of Medicine and the University of Massachusetts. Smith is a Harvard University Alley-Sheridan Fellow.

Founded in 1890, the Atlanta Medical Association continues to promote and protect the collective interests of minority physicians and their patients through its mission.
