Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) has been chosen as sole supplier by leading Mozambican operator mCel for the expansion and upgrade of its Mobile Packet Backbone Network solution (Mobile-PBN). The contract includes Redback’s SmartEdge products, and is set to boost network capacity and manage increased traffic growth.

Ericsson’s Mobile-PBN solution, which includes the Redback SmartEdge routers, delivers operator-proven IP infrastructure optimized to accommodate broadband packet data traffic growth, and transport for mCel’s already-installed Ericsson Mobile Softswitch Solution.

The deal will provide full telecom-quality IP transport for all traffic and will allow the operator to introduce high-quality services quickly and reliably. Deployment has started and is scheduled for completion during Q2 2008.

The contract builds upon Ericsson’s longstanding relationship with mCel. It also marks a significant step in the evolution to an all-IP network, and sets the stage for the introduction of a range of innovative multimedia services. The Redback SmartEdge routers deliver high reliability and predictable performance for real time voice and broadband services.

Mohamed Mussa, Director of Technology at mCel, says: “Ericsson’s technology leadership and end-to-end capabilities will allow mCel to meet growing subscriber numbers quickly and cost-effectively and to provide a competitive edge through the introduction of a range of popular, high-quality multimedia services to our customers.”

Jan Embro, President Ericsson Market Unit sub-Saharan Africa, says: “We are pleased to extend our partnership with mCel and help deliver cutting-edge solutions that will leverage existing infrastructure to meet future network growth. This contract also highlights the fundamental role of Redback’s SmartEdge routers as an integral part of Ericsson’s comprehensive Full Service Broadband offering. ”

The contract is another example of successful Ericsson and Redback joint wins. Ericsson is now supplying Redback equipment to 65 carriers in more than 45 countries.
