Shanxi Cable Operator strengthens Irdeto’s position in conditional access technology in China

Beijing, China .- Irdeto, the proven expert in content security for digital TV, IPTV and mobile networks, has announced that Shanxi Cable Broadcasting Network has chosen the Irdeto Digital TV conditional access solution to accelerate their digital migration process. Under the agreement, Irdeto will deliver one million smart cards over the next 24 months.

Shanxi province in China, has nearly four million cable TV subscribers. Shanxi Cable will migrate from their current Irdeto CryptoWorks system to the Irdeto Digital TV content security, to be installed in Shanxi’s capital city, Taiyuan.

Designed with convergence in mind, the Irdeto Digital TV solution is a modular, platform-independent system that allows operators to grow their subscriber base in a cost-effective manner, while ensuring content and business model protection. The solution is standards-based and meets all industry standards such as DVB Simulcrypt (versions 1 and 2).

More than 300 digital TV operators worldwide have enjoyed more piracy-free years and fewer smart card swaps thanks to Irdeto’s unique security technologies and strategies. Among these is Irdeto’s unique FlexiFlash functionality, which allows for new functionalities and even major security upgrades to be downloaded over the air to smart cards already in the field.

“After a thorough review of the content protection technologies currently available in China, Irdeto was the obvious partner for this large-scale digital migration project. We highly value Irdeto’s extensive experience in the digital TV conditional access market and its industry record of more than seven years with no piracy-related smart card swaps assures us of a smooth transition,” said Ms.Liu, General Manager, of Shanxi Cable Broadcasting Network.

“With the nation-wide digital migration initiative picking up speed prior to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Irdeto reaffirms its commitment to support local operators like Shanxi Cable Broadcasting Networkas they move into the new era of digital TV broadcasting,” stated Graham Kill, Chief Executive Officer of Irdeto. “This latest agreement demonstrates the increasing support given to our China-based customers from Irdeto’s technology to protect their premium content and revenue.”

In recognition for its contribution to China’s broadcasting industry, Irdeto was ranked first under the “Top 10 foreign brands” category in a national competition held in 2007. The event was organized by HC360.COM Broadcast Channel, a leading portal in the broadcast and TV industry whose target readers are decision-makers, executives, and engineers in the broadcast and TV industry. More than 200 companies took part in the three-month long competition.

China’s fast-growing middle class, coupled with the Government-backed initiative to adopt digital TV broadcasting, lay the foundation for the introduction of digital cable television that will deliver new levels of viewing experiences to the world’s most populous country. China had 140 million cable subscribers as of 2006, and the number is expected to grow to 184 million by 2011, according to research estimates by Media Partners Asia. The number of digital cable TV subscribers is expected to grow from 10 million to 61 million over the same period.
