AT&T Returning as Official Partner of the U.S. Olympic Teams in Torino, Italy 2006 and Beijing, China 2008
First Major Sponsorship Announcement for the New AT&T
San Antonio, Texas, November 28, 2005, In a move reaffirming its commitment to the Olympic spirit and to its role as a global leader in communications, the new AT&T in conjunction with the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) announced today that it will again be an Official Partner of the U.S. Olympic Team, providing significant financial support, products and services to America’s summer and winter athletes.
AT&T will serve as the Official Telecommunications Services Partner of the U.S. Olympic Team for the upcoming Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy, that start on Feb. 10, 2006, and the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
The sponsorship announcement by the new AT&T marks a return to the Olympic movement for the world-renowned company. AT&T had shared the global spotlight with the U.S. Olympic Team from 1984 to 2004, bringing Americans closer to their athletes and the Olympic Games.
With the recent acquisition of AT&T by SBC Communications Inc. and the decision to rename the combined companies AT&T Inc., the sponsorship with the USOC is a key element in the new AT&T’s commitment to support the new brand with the most extensive multimedia advertising campaign in the history of either SBC or AT&T.
Today’s joint announcement with the USOC reaffirms the company’s leadership position on the ultimate athletic stage.
“We’re very pleased that the new AT&T has rejoined the United States Olympic Committee in support of the men and women who represent our country at the Olympic Games,” said Ed Whitacre, chairman and chief executive officer of AT&T. “It is truly fitting that our first sponsorship announcement as the new AT&T is in support of the most recognized sports team in America. AT&T has a rich history of support for our nation’s Olympic athletes, and we’re very proud to move forward as a new company in that AT&T tradition.”
“We are extremely pleased to have a company with the tradition and heritage of AT&T supporting our Olympic athletes and programs,” said Jim Scherr, chief executive officer of the USOC. “AT&T joins the roster of leading companies that not only provide financial support to help train U.S. Olympic and Paralympic athletes, but are also industry leaders in their product category. We are particularly honored to be the first company with which the new AT&T has chosen to align itself by becoming an Official Partner.”
The Official Partner level is the highest level of domestic sponsorship available within the USOC, with Official Partner companies like AT&T providing the most significant levels of resources, products or services in support of the U.S. Olympic Team. As such, AT&T may leverage the benefits of Official Partner-level companies, such as marketing rights to the U.S. Olympic Team.
As the Official Telecommunications Services Partner for the U.S. Olympic Team, the new AT&T will also help sponsor U.S. Olympic Team trials, as well as exhibitions of various sports. The company will also serve as Associate Sponsor for the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame ceremony that will be held Dec. 8 in Chicago, Ill. Olympic greats Bob Hayes, Shannon Miller and Kristi Yamaguchi are among the inductees to U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame Class of 2006.
The company will also introduce programs for the upcoming Olympic Winter Games that leverage AT&T broadband technologies in support of the U.S. Olympic Team. Details on those programs will be announced before the 2006 Torino Games.
“This is the world’s premier athletic competition and we have become a global leader in communications,” Whitacre said. “That’s why our partnership with the U.S. Olympic Team is most fitting. We look forward to extending that partnership to U.S. athletes and consumers in the months and years ahead.”
