Predictive Analytics and Performance Management leaders team to empower decision makers to take actions today to optimize future results, maintain higher performance

SPSS Inc. (NASDAQ: SPSS), a leading worldwide provider of Predictive Analytics software, and Cognos, an IBM company and the world leader in business intelligence and performance managementsolutions, today announced a complementary software partnership to provide integration between IBM Cognos 8 BI and SPSS Predictive Analytics technology. Cognos customers can easily extend the value of Predictive Analytics outcomes to decision-makers across the enterprise to rapidly identify, evaluate and confidently pursue new market opportunities.

As part of the agreement, SPSS and Cognos will undertake joint go-to-market plans with special emphasis on driving Predictive Analytics in industry areas such as risk management for financial services and insurance, campaign effectiveness and product placement in retail and manufacturing, and sales effectiveness for life sciences. Integration with SPSS Predictive Analytics technology will extend Cognos’ powerful performance solutions and help enterprise customers anticipate and respond to changes in market conditions, risks and customer behavior.

According to Gartner, “There are four BI platform capabilities within the analysis category: OLAP, predictive modeling, scorecards and visualization…. But with increasing interest in process- and strategy-driven BI, requirements for predictive modeling and scorecards will also increase. Predictive modeling is needed to determine in advance the outcome of various business events. When used correctly, this information can promote better planning and optimize business processes.” *

University of Wollongong in Australia is a joint customer using IBM Cognos 8 BI and SPSS Predictive Analytics. The University strives to improve its performance through a comprehensive integrated performance management system that communicates relevant and accurate information on its operational, tactical and strategic goals to the university community. The team responsible for performance indicators at University of Wollongong sees an opportunity to close the performance management loop with IBM Cognos and SPSS technology integration.

“With Cognos, we can now easily monitor and analyze our current and historical performance. Tightening the integration between SPSS and Cognos software will allow us to more easily forecast and predict our future performance, especially around important issues such as student attrition,” said Nikita Atkins, director of performance indicators, University of Wollongong. “We’ll be able to take advanced statistical models and push them out to decision makers with IBM Cognos 8 in a format that they already use and understand. This integration of the historical perspective with predictive outcomes will be invaluable to decision makers.”

“Our customers operate in real-world environments where deep understanding and acting on information gleaned from their amassed data can mean competitive advantage. A combination of leading technology and specific expertise is required for success,” said Mel Zeledon, senior vice president, global alliances at Cognos. “This partnership brings two market leaders together to provide customers with the requisite best-practice technology and industry expertise to deliver the value of Predictive Analytics to everyone in the organization. It is a natural complement and extension to our existing platform and is a combination that drives better decision making and improves future competitiveness for customers.”

“Our clients and prospects are increasingly focused on a more tightly integrated solution that provides greater accessibility of Predictive Analytics to extend the value of the business intelligence system,” said Patrick McCue, vice president of global channels and alliances at SPSS. “This complementary software partnership with a market leader like Cognos reflects our continued focus on strengthening our alliance network to further enable the use of Predictive Analytics across the enterprise.”
