Inventing the Largest Known Air Vortex Cannon to Celebrate 20 Years
MINNEAPOLIS, MN. (March 11, 2008) - To honor 20 tasty years for its client Erbert & Gerbert’s Subs & Clubs, Colle+McVoy, the creators of the first-ever “Human Flipbook,” came up with a larger-than-life way to help the restaurant celebrate a milestone they created what’s known to be the world’s largest air vortex cannon which you have to see to believe at www.candlecannon.com.
“As a nod to the brand’s history of inventiveness and sense of discovery, the creative team designed a massive air cannon to celebrate the restaurant’s 20th anniversary in a big way,” said Mike Fetrow, executive creative director at Colle+McVoy. “The end result is a quirky and wholesome campaign that reflects the brand’s heritage.”
The one-of-a-kind “Candle Cannon” was designed and developed by the creative team of Mike Caguin, Dustin Black and John Neerland. Using the help of a physics professor, a trash can, duct tape and surgical tubing, the team created prototypes to explore and test ways for the Candle Cannon to become more and more powerful.
“Everyone blows out candles on their birthday, but not everyone does so from 60 yards away,” said art director Dustin Black. “We wanted this anniversary to be a true blowout.”
“After we built the cannon and did the math, we found out it was bigger than the Mercury Space Capsule,” said copywriter John Neerland, “but a hair smaller than my first apartment.” The finished product is 10 feet long and 9 feet in diameter, holds a volume of 2,873 gallons of air, accurately shoots the air beyond 180 feet and will be used by restaurant franchises to continue celebratory fun and games at locations throughout the Midwest.
To help bring the Candle Cannon experience to life, www.candlecannon.com features a computer-mouse-operated air cannon that can be used to shoot targets on the site for points, similar to what may be experienced at an old-time shooting gallery. The site also features additional footage of the cannon’s construction, behind-the-scenes action and a free downloadable Erbert & Gerbert’s coupon.
“Erbert & Gerbert’s is derived out of the imagination of a father who enjoyed telling bedtime stories to his children,” explained Eric Wolfe, CEO and president of Erbert & Gerbert’s Franchise Systems, Inc. “We couldn’t think of a better way to honor the restaurant’s history of inventiveness, discovery and quirkiness than to celebrate 20 years in a unique and adventurous way.”
