Continuing its educational commitment to students in Northeast Ohio, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company will host its 8th Engineering Career Day for Young Women at the company’s Akron headquarters on April 19.

This year’s program, titled “Picture Yourself as an Engineer,” is a free event for students in grades 6 through 12.

The program focuses on exposing young women to opportunities available in the engineering and science fields and careers that can be launched from an engineering background. Students will learn about the different engineering disciplines, participate in hands-on activities, and interact with local professionals.

“This year’s event has been modified to provide a high level of interaction between students and professionals from Goodyear, other industrial companies, and local universities,” said Brandy Moorhead, a mechanical engineer and project manager for Goodyear’s original equipment customers. Moorhead is a co-chair of the event.

“Separate sessions will be offered for middle and high school students on preparing for college, as well as a special session on financial aid for parents,” added co-chair Rachel Barnette, a chemical engineer in material development, who works at Goodyear’s Technical Center.

Several engineering disciplines will be discussed, including polymer, biomedical, aeronautical, chemical, electrical, materials and mechanical.

This fun and informative day will conclude with one young participant winning a ride on the Goodyear blimp. The event runs 8 a.m. – 3 p.m., is open to the public and includes lunch.

Participants must pre-register at www.goodyear.com/careerday. Registration deadline is April 5, but space is limited. Students may be accompanied by one parent during the day’s activities.
