Statement from Senior Fellow of the Corporation Mr. Roland Betts

WEBWIRE

The Study Group to Consider New Residential Colleges met with the Yale Corporation on Friday morning, February 22, 2008, to discuss its extensive report. There was a stimulating discussion surrounding the recommendations by the Study Group to ensure that the culture of Yale College would not be compromised. Specifically, we discussed how the quality of both classroom education and extracurricular life would be maintained if the enrollment of Yale College were to be increased. I was most appreciative – as were all of the fellows – of the Study Group’s very thoughtful analysis and for offering so many valuable recommendations. The Committee has served the University well.

At the conclusion of the session with the Study Group, the Corporation met with the officers and Dean Salovey for further discussion. The following day, Saturday, February 23, 2008, at the formal meeting of the Corporation, the Fellows directed the Officers to embark upon two additional studies which will inform the discussion relating to the residential colleges:

1. The Provost, with the assistance of the Vice President for Finance and Administration, will prepare an initial capital budget covering both the construction of the colleges and associated facilities in support of expansion of Yale College, and a pro forma operating budget detailing the increases in operating costs (new faculty positions, support staff, facilities maintenance, etc.); and
2. The Vice President for Development will prepare a fundraising plan relating to the solicitation of the gifts in support of the project and related new expenses.
