Israeli Parliament Members to benefit from secure, converged communications

NOVEMBER 17, 2005
AIRPORT CITY, Israel - The Knesset, Israel’s governing parliament, has selected Nortel* [NYSE/TSX: NT] to provide an advanced IP telephony network to support secure, leading-edge voice services.

The converged IP telephony network provided by Nortel is designed to allow Members of Knesset (MKs) to use their computers for a wide range of telephony services such as long distance calls, voicemail and unified messaging.

The current deployment calls for the implementation of the Nortel Communication Server 1000E, making the Knesset and its members the first in Israel to benefit from the highly advanced IP telephony solution. The deployment is expected to help Knesset reduce operational costs.

“The Knesset’s new network represents one of the most leading-edge IP telephony systems ever implemented in Israel,” said Sorin Lupu, president of Eastern Europe markets, Nortel. “Nortel’s advanced IP technologies are designed to give MKs improved services while helping reduce the government’s operational costs.”

In the first phase of the project, to be completed by the end of 2005, 400 of the total 1,600 lines in the IP telephony system will be deployed in the Knesset’s new wing by Taldor, Nortel’s channel partner in the project. The remaining lines will be upgraded in the second stage of the project during 2006.

The Knesset’s new network also includes the Nortel Switched Firewall for enhanced security, protecting the network against external threats such as worms and viruses while providing full backup and redundancy. Nortel will also provide its CallPilot* unified messaging solution, combining voicemail, e-mail and fax messages into a single mailbox, accessible by phone, any desktop PC, or mobile e-mail enabled devices (PDAs).

In addition, the Israeli parliament will deploy the Nortel Contact Center for skill-based routing, flexible call treatments, real-time displays, and comprehensive management and reporting functionality enhancing the overall customer service experience. These functions are designed to empower officials with the tools and agility to deliver unique and improved care to the public.

The Nortel Communication Server 1000E provides the benefits of a converged network and supports advanced applications such as unified messaging, contact center and IP phones, in addition to offering feature-rich telephony applications and built-in reliability and survivability.
