Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) has been selected by Vodafone Spain, the Spanish subsidiary of the world’s leading mobile communications company, to provide the DSL technology solution that will optimize the transport of its mobile data services in Spain.

Alcatel-Lucent will deploy its cost-effective IP-based backhaul solution in the cities of Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Bilbao, Zaragoza, Valladolid and Malaga. Alcatel-Lucent’s solution will also maintain the bandwidth and speed of Vodafone’s 3G/HSPA data services.

Alcatel–Lucent will provide Vodafone Spain with an innovative IP DSLAM-based backhaul solution, leveraging the economics of Ethernet and service awareness of IP. Leveraging its capabilities as an end-to-end network integrator, Alcatel-Lucent will supply the implementation services including network deployment, testing and integration of the entire DSL backhaul solution.

“This project further reinforces our strategic relationship with Vodafone. Our vast experience of end-to-end management and integration of complex IP projects will be key in meeting Vodafone’s requirements”, said Frederic Rose, President of Alcatel-Lucent’s business in Europe, Africa and Asia. “Vodafone will also benefit from the added value of our professional services for time-to-market launch of new services and helping them to ensure an even more efficient and reliable service to their mobile broadband customers.”

This project sees Alcatel-Lucent consolidating its position as a key supplier to Vodafone Spain, delivering technology solutions in its converged backbone, transport and access networks, as well as providing critical expertise as a network and application integrator.

Vodafone Spain will deploy Alcatel-Lucent’s 7330 Intelligent Services Access Manager Fiber-to-the-node (ISAM FTTN) solution. The 7330 is a compact remote IP DSLAM that brings fiber and high bandwidth availability closer to the user which, in turn, delivers a better end-user experience.

Alcatel-Lucent remains the uncontested market leader in broadband access with more than 150 million DSL lines shipped to-date. More than 180 customers have adopted the ISAM product family globally – a figure that includes over 80% of the top 20 DSL operators in the world.
