BelAir100M Mobile Mesh Node for 4.9 GHz and 5.9 GHz spectrum brings fixed network reliability to mobile applications: First to offer seamless mobility up to 150 mph with “Make before Break” functionality
BelAir Networks, the leading provider of mobile broadband mesh network solutions, today announced the availability of the BelAir100M Mobile Mesh Node for both 4.9 GHz Public Safety and 5.9 GHz Intelligent Transportation Services (ITS) wireless frequencies. BelAir Networks ability to support vehicular speed mobility with standard wireless devices is now extended to address the high-performance mobile connectivity requirements of critical Public Safety and ITS applications in vehicles traveling as fast as 150 miles per hour (mph) or 240 kilometers per hour (kph).

“We’ve tested over one hundred wireless broadband networks throughout the world and can confirm that the highest performing metro Wi-Fi networks are built with BelAir Networks infrastructure products”, said Ken Biba, Chief Technology Officer, Novarum, a broadband wireless consultancy that tests wireless broadband networks and publishes the Novarum Wireless Broadband Review.

First to Offer ‘Make before Break’ Capability for Seamless Mobility
Building on BelAir Networks proven technology leadership, the BelAir100M is the highest performance mobile mesh node available for vehicular deployments. It is unique in its support for ‘make before break’ mobility enabling the fastest and most reliable handover, and including ‘look ahead’ functionality. These features ensure continuous high-performance broadband connectivity at speeds of up to 150 mph or 240 kph. Offered in both dual and tri-radio variants, and supporting the same high performance radio modules as the rest of the BelAir portfolio, the BelAir100M can be configured to support any combination of 4.9 GHz Public Safety, 5.9 GHz ITS, Wi-Fi or WiMAX radio frequencies. In keeping with BelAir’s carrier class product reliability, the BelAir100M meets or exceeds all transportation regulatory requirements. For ease of management and operation, the BelAir100M is managed as a discoverable network element in the BelView Management system (BelView NMS) and runs the BelAir Operating System (BelAirOS).

“Public safety agencies and mass transit authorities need vehicular-speed mobile support for very high bandwidth applications including real-time video security and monitoring,” said Dave Park, Vice President of Product Marketing, BelAir Networks. “In addition to offering the industry’s highest performance, the BelAir100M is the only vehicular mobility solution that provides concurrent support for both 4.9 GHz Public Safety and 5.9 GHz ITS bands – as well as Wi-Fi and WiMAX – enabling local governments to leverage one mesh network to address multiple public safety and ITS applications securely and cost-effectively.”

Maximizing the Network Investment and Supporting Multi-Agency Interoperability
The modular architecture and multi-frequency support inherent in the BelAir100M maximizes the network investment made by the city, public safety agency or mass transit authority in their wireless mesh infrastructure. The BelAir100M can be configured with both an access radio and a backhaul radio or with dual backhaul radios for resilient dual band backhaul deployments. On the backhaul, the BelAir100M can support multiple connections to the road or trackside mesh network, while on the access side, the node can connect to multiple standards based in-vehicle devices (including video cameras, as well as Wi-Fi enabled laptops and phones).

As part of BelAir Networks next generation wireless mesh, the BelAir100M also enables multi-agency communications interoperability, critical to facilitating efficient response to emergency or disaster situations involving multiple agencies or jurisdictions. For example, in a situation where a Mass Transit incident requires the attention of Public Safety agencies, the BelAir100M can provide immediate and possibly life-saving value. If a crime or accident occurs in a fast-moving train car between stations, video of the incident from cameras mounted in the car and connected to the BelAir100M can be transmitted real-time to a central location and to the remote public safety personnel who will be responding. The video can also be recorded and stored for review by public safety and mass transit officials at a later time to facilitate investigations. In addition to supporting video applications, the BelAir100M can also be configured to provide local wireless access for private or public use within the vehicle.

BelAir Networks is the leading provider of mobile broadband mesh network solutions with more than 300 deployments worldwide in leading cities such as Minneapolis, London and Toronto, as well as high-profile venues such as Lincoln Center in New York, and Dolphin Stadium in Miami.

BelAir Networks technology will be featured at the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO) Fifth Annual Winter Summit being held January 28-30, 2008 in Orlando. Media and analysts interested in speaking with a BelAir Networks spokesperson can e-mail PR@belairnetworks.com.
