Siemens supplies drives and automation equipment for an additional hot-dip galvanizing line of voestalpine Stahl GmbH

Siemens Metals Technologies will now also supply the hot-dip galvanizing line 5 of the Austrian steel producer voestalpine Stahl GmbH, Linz, with drives and automation equipment. Siemens previously supplied the same company with equipment for the hot-dip galvanizing lines 3 and 4. The order value is a two-digit million Euro figure. The first strip of metal is scheduled to be galvanized at the new plant at the end of 2009 and completion of the power-up phase is planned for Summer 2010.

The hot-dip galvanizing line 5 will have an annual capacity of around 400,000 metric tons and will be used to produce high-strength galvanized cold wide strip up to 1750 millimeters wide for applications in the automobile industry.

For the new line, Siemens is supplying Sinamics drive systems with a total installed power output of around 15 megawatts. Simatic PCS7 will be used as the process control system. The hot-dip galvanizing line will be automated by means of Simatic S7 processors, one of which will control the safety systems. WinCC will be used for visualization. The scope of supply and services also includes planning of the electrical and control equipment, creation of the software, including the integration test. In addition, Siemens is responsible for complete installation of all the electrical equipment and commissioning of the electrical and control equipment for the plant.

voestalpine Stahl GmbH is a company of the Steel Division of voestalpine AG which is registered at the stock exchange. At the Linz location, the company operates a fully integrated steelworks with an annual production of around five million metric tons. The main customers are the automobile industry and its suppliers, manufacturers of household appliances and suppliers to the building industry.
