Women’s Health Program series addresses health needs of women of color and minority women

First two events are Feb. 28 and April 6

Ann Arbor, MI – The University of Michigan Health System Women’s Health Program has expanded its Women’s Health Seminar Series to offer seminars focused on the health needs of women of color and minority women.

Laughing WomenThis health series will begin on Feb. 28 at 6 p.m. at the Ann Arbor Community Center, with a first session – led by Tricia Tang, Ph.D., and Robin Nwankwo, M.S., R.D., CDE, -- that will address women’s concerns about diabetes across cultures. This session is offered in partnership with the Health System’s Minority Health Research Program and the Program for Multicultural Health.

The second health seminar in this series, designed to serve the health information needs of Latinas, will be held on April 6 at 12:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Ypsilanti. This session will be conducted in Spanish by Sara Frost, M.D., and Joanne Bailey, C.N.M., Ph.D., both from the U-M Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. This health seminar, “Promoviendo la salud integral en las mujeres Latinas,” will focus on depression and diabetes in women.

More WHP seminars are being planned for 2008 and will focus on the unique health information needs of African American, Asian American, Latina and Arab American women.

“We hope to engage a growing number of diverse women in the very communities they live in and to support these women in their quest for optimum health for themselves and for their families,” says Angela Johnson, who is organizing the series.

This focused health seminar series is part of a broader women’s health seminar series that the WHP launched in January 2006 to help satisfy the demand for credible health information.
