Winter Riding in Canada-It’s Highly Under Rated

Winter horseback riding brings puffs of cold air blowing through the horses’ nostrils as they climb the hills covered by knarled oak and tall poplars. See a flash of a whitetail deer as he jumps off the trail and hear the howling of the coyotes on a full moon night. The silence is golden and the stars twinkle brightly.

The jingle of the bells and the echo’s of laughter follow the sleigh pulled by Tim and Tucker, two Belgian horses as they merrily pull you along through gorgeous trails sheltered by the towering spruce. Behind the sleigh the kids are on toboggan’s falling off and running to catch up getting their fresh air and exercise.

Next, along come the horseback riders enjoying one of the best times of year to ride with both horses and rider being comfortable. The horses love to lope along the trails taking you up big hills to see fantastic views of the countryside.

Smoke rising lazily through the air is spotted as we come upon a cabin in the middle of now where, enticing us to a warm fire and a hot cup of cocoa. Tying up the team and riding horses up to the hitching rail we all dismount for refreshments. It’s too nice a day to sit inside the cabin but we hang our wet mitts over the stove to dry while we have a wiener roast over the open fire pit. The kids are getting anxious now that they are fed and watered for they are ready to try out the big toboggan hill. Pulling the toboggan’s behind them they trudge up the steep hill. Squeals of laughter can be heard loud and clear as they take their turns at mastering the hill. After an hour of walking the kids are tired and are now ready to hop on the sleigh and head for home. The scenic trails are over 100 years old and the area is rich in history. Telling stories about the first settlers in the area and their way of life to dinosaurs being discovered in the river make the trip home go quickly.
