Swedish rail company Banverket selects Alcatel-Lucent for its new national network

WEBWIRE

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced the Swedish Rail Administration, Banverket, has selected Alcatel-Lucent to deploy a national IP/MPLS network to handle all business communication for the railway, including critical operations such as signaling. By deploying Alcatel-Lucent’s solution across multiple sites in Sweden, Banverket is able to offer services with high availability and security as it transforms its infrastructure towards a next generation network.

Banverket has overall responsibility for the rail transport system in Sweden, which covers all conventional railways. Alcatel-Lucent will deploy a full-scale 10 gigabit national IP/MPLS network for handling the transmission of Banverket’s operations such as signalling, railway intersections, sign-posts on train platforms, control and transport of all communication related to GSM-R (Global System for Mobile-Railway) and LAN services such as Internet VPN Voice between Banverket’s offices.

“Banverket’s network transformation to IP/MPLS is a natural evolution in the Nordic railway segment and highlights Alcatel-Lucent as a proven solution for other transportation infrastructures across Europe where high availability is essential,” said Frederic Rose, President of Alcatel-Lucent’s business in Europe, Africa and Asia. “The quality of service and high availability features of our solution, which meet the ‘always on’ requirements of service providers, were critical elements in Banverket’s decision.”

The solution includes the Alcatel-Lucent 7750 Service Router, 7450 Ethernet Service Switch and the 7250 Service Access Switch as the highly reliable backbone and equipment for SHDSL-solutions (access over copper lines). The Alcatel-Lucent 5620 Service Aware Manager and the 5650 Control Plane Assurance Manager will manage the end-to-end solution.

Alcatel-Lucent will also deliver this solution in a turnkey mode including design and maintenance services over a five-year period.
