Largest Nordex multi-megawatt wind farm with S77 turbines completed in Sardinia

Cagliari/Hamburg.– Nordex has completed the Cadau I wind farm in Sardinia with 14 S77/1500 kW turbines producing a total output of 21 MW for its customer Energie Verde Srl, a subsidiary of the listed Danish company Greentech Energy Systems A/S.

Cadau is located around five kilometers from Cagliari in the Macchiareddu industrial estate not far from the coast in South Sardinia. The mean annual wind speed measured here of 5.8 – 6.0 m/s is ideal for the 1.5 MW turbine, which have been specially developed for non-coastal sites.

Installed on tubular towers measuring 61.5 meters in height, the wind turbines will be producing around 46 million kilowatt/hours of clean electricity per year. This is enough to cover the annual electricity requirements of some 11,000 four-person households in Sardinia and equivalent to annual savings of 36,000 tons of harmful CO2 emissions per year. To cope with the high local temperatures, the 14 turbines will be supplied in the special hot-climate version.

Energia Verde Srl awarded Nordex the contract for turnkey execution of the project in 2006. Nordex was responsible for the main construction preparations such as the foundation works, access roads, cabling as well as the installation of a substation and the whole project execution. In performing these activities, it made a particular point of using local content and services, employing the services of companies located in the vicinity. Part of the tower structure was also outsourced to Italian suppliers.
