Antigua Public Utilities Authority To Enhance Customer Experience With Nortel’s Advanced Voice Solution, Global Services

ANTIGUA – Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA), a leading provider of utility and communications services in Antigua and Barbuda, has chosen Nortel* [NYSE/TSX: NT] to upgrade its telephone network with superior capabilities, in order to provide consumers and businesses in Antigua with integrated voice, video and data as well as local and long distance services. The upgrade is designed to offer customers more competitive and comprehensive service packages. In addition, the solution includes Nortel’s Global Services portfolio to seamlessly transition existing services to the upgraded next generation network.


Nortel technology and services allow APUA to smoothly evolve to a converged network combining voice, data and video features that will enhance a customer’s experience for Hyperconnectivity, an emerging era of communications where anything that can be connected will be connected. With these solutions, APUA’s customers can extend their services and may be reached regardless of where they are in the world, as long as there is a high-speed Internet connection. This way, their telephone number, messages and e-mail, travel with them on whatever mobile device they connect to the Internet, thus allowing for true mobility.

The solution for APUA will include Nortel Communication Server 2000, a new generation IP softswitch to help meet growing subscriber demand for next generation voice services. APUA’s solution will also include Nortel’s Metro Ethernet Routing Switch 8600, Alteon Secure Firewall and Nortel’s Optical Multiservice Edge 6130 compact packet optical platform, which will facilitate the future use of alternate off-island fiber optic transport.

Nortel will provide network integration, support and application services from the Nortel Global Services portfolio. This will include project management, installation and commissioning; site, network and database engineering; software maintenance; and implementation of SIP-based multimedia services like ad-hoc audio and video conferencing, music on-hold/announcements, and instant messaging. Nortel’s Global Services portfolio includes a full range of applications, implementation, management and support for end-to-end multi-vendor, multi-technology networks.
