Mars Hill, NC -- Throughout this past summer and fall, students at Harbor Oaks Boarding School in western North Carolina have volunteered hundreds of hours at a local area ski resort, helping to prepare for the upcoming ski season. The contributions included cleaning, construction and other various projects.

The hard work has allowed students and staff at Harbor Oaks Boarding School to learn about teamwork, reciprocity and the value of giving back to the community.

“We’re very proud of our students for all their hard work,” said Dr. Pat Jones, director of Harbor Oaks Boarding School.

“Projects like these really help to build self esteem, confidence and a sense of accomplishment,” she added.

Based in scenic Mars Hills, North Carolina, Harbor Oaks is a private, non-profit, behavior modification school that offers education and programs for young men and women with a history of emotional difficulties, poor academic performance, difficult family relationships and behavior problems. Volunteer programs like the one at the ski resort are one of the many things that make the school unique.

The school’s close relationship with the resort also allow for part-time employment opportunities and physical education programs.

“I’ve been amazed at the quality of the work of the students and their willingness to do anything that is asked of them,” said Johnny Goins, manager of the resort.

He added, “I think it is a great concept that has worked out well both for the school and for our business. They are an awesome group of kids and the staff sets the example by volunteering right alongside them.”

The ski resort will be open for business beginning today and the students of Harbor Oaks will continue their volunteer work, helping with greeting visitors, cleaning, cafeteria work and organizing lift lines. Best of all, Harbor Oaks students will be able to take advantage of the slopes for fun and fellowship throughout the ski season.
