ProSafe Smart Wireless Controller (WFS709TP) Named “A Must for any SMB WLAN Shortlist” Receiving Praise for Performance/Range, Security, Ease-of-Configuration, Monitoring and Management, Extras, and Price

SANTA CLARA, Calif.- NETGEAR, Inc. (NASDAQGM: NTGR), a worldwide provider of technologically advanced, branded networking and security products, today announced that the ProSafe® Smart Wireless Controller (WFS709TP) received top ratings in a recent review of SMB-focused wireless LAN controllers conducted by Network Computing magazine. The review, which can be viewed at: http://www.networkcomputing.com/channels/wireless/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=202800770&pgno=7, evaluated and ranked the ProSafe Smart Wireless Controller, along with WLAN controllers from Bluesocket, D-Link, Motorola, Ruckus, and 3Com, in the areas of performance/range, security, ease-of configuration, monitoring and management, extras, and pricing.

The product roundup, which reviewed and compared WLAN solutions targeted at small and midsize enterprises, summarized the NETGEAR ProSafe Wireless Controller by stating, “In comparison with the competition, NETGEAR exhibited on-par performance, advanced features and good value, making it a must for any SMB WLAN shortlist.” Reviewer Jameson Blandford noted that the NETGEAR system is “an enterprise-class offering at bargain pricing.”

The ProSafe Smart Wireless Controller received “ideal” ratings for its security features, extra features and pricing. Security features including an integrated stateful packet inspection firewall, integrated RADIUS Server, captive portal authentication, and rogue AP detection and containment, were praised as well as extra features that include “the best integrated WLAN coverage-map view of the bunch,” according to Blandford.

In addition to receiving praise for NETGEAR’s ProSafe Control Center configuration wizards geared toward simplifying common administration tasks, the ProSafe Wireless Controller was noted to be the most affordable solution in the review. “Pricing for NETGEAR’s single radio system was the lowest of the competition thanks to its $2,900 controller and $180 802.11g access points. For more capacity, deploying 802.11a/b/g APs, at $240 per unit, is also the least pricey dual-band option of the bunch.”

“We’re extremely pleased that our ProSafe Smart Wireless Controller performed so well in the Network Computing review as it validates the fact that the value, performance and enterprise-class feature set delivered by our controller provides an ideal, yet affordable, WLAN solution for the SMB,” explained Peter Newton, Director of Product Marketing, Business Wireless and Security Products at NETGEAR. “Given our legacy and deep understanding of the SMB market, we realized the opportunity to launch a complete WLAN solution designed to meet the unique needs of SMB companies. By leveraging core technology suited for big enterprises but focusing on making the product more versatile and easier-to-use and manage with NETGEAR’s own ProSafe Control Center administration interface, we’ve been able to create an end-to-end solution that delivers enterprise-class functionality tailored for SMB customers.”

About the ProSafe Smart Wireless Controller (WFS709TP)
The NETGEAR ProSafe Smart Wireless Controller (WFS709TP) enables small and medium businesses to deploy and easily manage a wireless LAN architecture that delivers better wireless connectivity and security than traditional, unmanaged wireless LAN deployments.

The NETGEAR ProSafe Smart Wireless Controller provides end users with robust functionality including the ability to seamlessly roam across multiple access points, centralized security and management, built-in RF planning and management capabilities, and location tracking. It features built-in Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) support across the eight 10/100 ports to ease access point deployment and incorporates a 10/100/1000 uplink port for connection to more Power over Ethernet switches for additional wireless access point deployments and to the network backbone. In addition to an advanced security feature set which includes 802.1x, support for EAP-PEAP, EAP-TLS, EAP-TTLS, 802.11i, MAC address filtering, SSID and location based authentication, the WFS709TP also incorporates enterprise-class security features including RADIUS- and LDAP-based AAA server support enabling companies to unify wired and wireless access without compromising on security.

A standalone WFS709TP can support up to 16 wireless access points and 256 users per controller. The ProSafe smart wireless solution can support up to three Smart Wireless Controllers configured to support as many as 48 NETGEAR ProSafe access points including the ProSafe 802.11a/g Dual Band Light Wireless Access Point (WAGL102) and ProSafe 802.11g Light Wireless Access Point (WGL102). Existing networks with WG102 or WAG102 Access Points can be updated to work in a controller-based architecture with a firmware change in those access points.

To maximize performance and efficiency of the wireless infrastructure, the WFS709TP integrates IntelliFi RF Management to provide automatic self-configuration of all radio parameters to provide continuous wireless coverage and mobility support. With the ability to input floor plan images, number of floors, building dimensions, desired coverage, and an overlap factor of fault tolerance, network administrators can utilized the built-in planning tool to predict the RF characteristics of the building to plot the optimal locations for access points and display predicted coverage.

Ensuring network resiliency to protect mission critical applications, the WFS709TP supports fault tolerant hardware with industry standard N+1 wireless controller redundancy and access point interleaving to provide a wireless network that guarantees the highest possibly availability with no single point of failure.
