Media Advisory: Carnegie Mellon Celebrates Tartan Racing’s

WEBWIRE

EVENT: Carnegie Mellon President Jared L. Cohon will host a victory reception for William “Red” Whittaker and the rest of the Carnegie Mellon Tartan Racing team, winners of the DARPA Urban Challenge. This is the first campuswide celebration since the team’s robotic SUV, Boss, took first place and the $2 million grand prize in the Nov. 3 robot race at Victorville, Calif. Boss safely navigated 55 miles of urban roads and deftly handled human and robotic traffic, completing the course almost 20 minutes faster than the nearest competitor. Speakers from the campus, sponsor organizations and city government are scheduled. The Urban Challenge trophy will be on display.

WHEN: 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 4. Speakers are scheduled to begin at 4:50 p.m.

WHERE: Rangos Ballroom, University Center. Parking is available in the East Campus Garage adjacent to the University Center.

ALSO ON TUESDAY: Boss, a roboticized 2007 Chevy Tahoe, will be on display from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the lawn in front of the College of Fine Arts building. Tartan Racing team members will be on hand to talk about the race and the vehicle.
