Epson Introduces New USB 2.0 High-Speed Controller LSI Capable of Operating Two USB Ports Simultaneously

Seiko Epson Corporation (“Epson”) has developed the S1R72V18, the newest product in its S1R72V Series of USB controller LSI products that are compatible with high-speed USB 2.0. Shipments of samples of the new model have already commenced.


The S1R72V Series products already in volume production have established an excellent reputation worldwide by making it possible for users to connect to computers and download high-volume files at super high speeds, and tap into USB memory to transmit music data at high speeds. In terms of standby power consumption, the S1R72V17 model consumes only 3.9 µW of power during Sleep Mode. Due to their low power consumption and other features, the products have contributed greatly to the development of equipment and mobile terminals for which noise reduction is an extremely important factor.


The newly developed S1R72V18 takes advantage of the low power consumption of the S1R72V Series and enables isochronous transfer which is used when connecting to portable music players. In addition, the new model comes equipped with two high-speed USB 2.0 ports: one shared port for both device and host functions and one port exclusively for host functions. The S1R72V18 is the first model in the series to be capable of operating two USB ports simultaneously. The main target application for this model is car navigation systems for which multiple ports are becoming increasingly common. Consequently, the S2R72V18, which is now under development, will feature a guaranteed operating temperature range of -40°C to 105°C, and is expected to meet the specifications for the AEC-100 industry standard for automobile electronics quality.


Epson plans to continue to expand its lineup of USB 2.0 high-speed controller LSI products because they represent a key segment for the company. Epson hopes to establish itself as a leader in the USB market.


Features of S1R72V18
1) USB 2.0 host functions

* Equipped with two ports: Port 0 and Port 1 (Port 0 is a shared port for both host and device functions). Capable of operating two ports simultaneously: Port 0 for USB device functions and Port 1 for USB host functions
* Supports HS (480 Mbps), FS (12 Mbps), LS (1.5 Mbps) transfer rates
* Supports control, bulk, interrupt, and isochronous transfer
* Built-in pull-down resistance for downstream port (external circuit not required)
* USB power switch interface

2) USB 2.0 device functions

* Equipped with one shared port for both host functions and device functions: Port 0
* Supports HS (480 Mbps) and FS (12 Mbps) transfer rates
* Supports control, bulk, interrupt, and isochronous transfer
* Supports one endpoint for control transfer in addition to five general endpoints for bulk, interrupt, and isochronous transfer

3) CPU interface

* Compatible with 16-bit width general CPU interface
* Includes DMA 2 ch (with one DMA, multiword procedure, and slave for each port)
* Voltage change of interface is possible: 1.8 V to 3.3 V (typical)

4) Miscellaneous

* Clock input: 12 MHz or 24 MHz crystal oscillator (oscillator circuit and 1 MΩ feedback resistor) (Epson Toyocom FA-128 or FA-238V recommended)
* Power supply voltage: USB-3.3 V, Internal-1.8 V, CPU Bus-1.8 V to 3.3 V (typical)
* Package: BGA package (S1/2R72V18B10E100)-10 mm square, 121 pin, 0.8 mm pitch; QFP package (S1/2R72V18F14E100)-12 mm square, 80 pin, 0.5 mm pitch
* Operating temperature range: -40°C to 85°C (S1R72V18)
-40°C to 105°C (S2R72V18 under development)
