Hawaiian Airlines chooses Trents to power new long range fleet


Hawaiian Airlines has selected two versions of the Rolls-Royce Trent series to power its new long range fleet of Airbus twinjets. The value of the business, at engine list prices, is approximately $460 million.

The order comprises Trent XWB engines for six A350-800 XWB aircraft, and Trent 700s for six A330-200s.

Hawaiian plans to lease additional Trent-powered A330s for earlier introduction to its fleet, starting in 2009.

The A350 XWB, for which the Trent XWB is the sole engine offered, will give Hawaiian the capability to fly non-stop from Honolulu to markets throughout Asia, Australasia, the Americas and Europe.

With its Trent-powered A330s, Hawaiian will be able to serve all North America and points in eastern Asia, again with non-stop services.

The Trent selection sees Rolls-Royce building on an existing partnership with Hawaiian Airlines, which currently operates a fleet of 11 BR715-powered Boeing 717s.

The Trent XWB is available in a range of thrusts from 74,000 to 92,000 lb. A single engine type will power all versions of the A350 XWB. By the time the Trent XWB enters service, Trent series engines will have accumulated more than 75 million flying hours.

Final engine configuration and selection of technologies are scheduled to be completed by mid-2008. The first Trent XWB will be ground tested in 2010. In 2011, the engine will make its maiden flight on a flying test bed, followed by airworthiness certification and first flight on the A350 XWB in 2012.

The Trent 700, which entered service in 1995, is the only engine designed specifically for the A330, and is the market leader with a 50 per cent share of orders.

Introduction of latest Trent family technology to the Trent 700 will ensure increased benefits to customers. It is the most environmentally friendly engine on the A330, with the greatest margin to CAEP 4 international emissions legislation.
