Patriots/Eagles officially the biggest point spread EVER!

WEBWIRE

Sports betting expert RJ Bell, the only sports bettor on Forbes’ recent list of Gambling Gurus, provides the official point spread numbers behind the biggest favorite in NFL history.

Las Vegas, Nevada (November 25, 2007) – New England vs. Philadelphia talk this week focused on how remarkably big the Las Vegas line on the game was; now that the game has kicked-off it can be officially stated that the 24 point spread is the biggest in NFL history!

Keep in mind that the modern era of pointspreads began in 1980, and that before that records are unreliable. Also keep in mind that there is no single official Las Vegas line – which leads to widespread misreporting due to faulty information. At Pregame.com, much care has gone into determining the most accurate point spread for historical purposes; the -24 attributed to the Patriots this week is a weighted average of 5 major sportsbooks, yielding truly trustworthy point spread data.

Before this week, the biggest favorite ever was San Francisco 49ers -23 at home over Cincinnati Bengals. The game was played on 12/5/93, and San Fran beat the underdog Bengals 21 to 8. Before this week, only 5 games had a line of 20 or more.

Looking ahead, it is likely this record will not stand for long. Expert estimates indicate that the Patriots will be approximately -28 point favorites vs. Jets on 12/16/07, and -30 favorites vs. Dolphins on 12/23/07!
