LOCKHEED MARTIN women in engineering day inspires young women to explore engineering careers

MOORESTOWN, NJ.- Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] introduced more than 70 young women from 13 local high schools to the exciting world of engineering during the company’s fifth annual “Women in Engineering Day” event at its Moorestown facility.

During the day-long event, the tenth-grade students learned about the many exciting fields of engineering – including electrical, software, mechanical and ceramics; the growing job opportunities in engineering; and how many women are already enjoying successful careers as engineers. They also talked with real engineers about “what it takes” to be an engineer and met peers who share common interests in math and science.

“Each year we try to reach out to more young women to show them how their natural interests in math and science could translate to exciting engineering careers,” explained Lockheed Martin engineer Carrie Ballester, the event’s organizer. “Sometimes young high school women thinking about college don’t realize they could become engineers – we’re encouraging them to think about it.”

During “Women in Engineering Day,” the students participated in a hands-on, team-oriented engineering challenge project, which focused on dealing with requirements and constraints and sharing knowledge – all essential skills in engineering disciplines. In addition, the students participated in an activities fair where they learned about the different types of engineering, spoke with a panel of women engineers and met with representatives from universities and engineering societies, who provided information about educational opportunities in engineering.
