Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced secure wireless and 10 Gigabit Ethernet customer wins with 10 universities in Korea, as student and faculty demand for access to multimedia services drives network expansions.

Alcatel-Lucent’s OmniAccess wireless LAN switch (OAW-6000) and access points were selected by Taegu Science College, Hyupsung College, Catholic College of Busan, Hansung University, Soongsil University and Ansan College of Technology. These new networks are equipped with the highest levels of user security and authentication, enabling faculty and staff to wirelessly access the Internet as well as the college’s online administrative and grading resources from any place on campus, while protecting sensitive data from unwanted intrusion.

“With our Wi-Fi network, our end-users can now access the Internet from all over the campus, which has dramatically increased use of our network,” said Ki-hyun Cho, manager of education support and management team, Center for Information Technology of Soongsil University. “Nevertheless, management of the Alcatel-Lucent network has remained very efficient.”

Several other universities have selected the Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch 9000 switch products to provide 10-Gigabit Ethernet backbone networks including Hongik University, Soongsil University, the Ansan campus of Hanyang University, Duksung Womens University and Kyungmin College. In all cases, the universities wanted to both increase bandwidth and ensure network security, and chose to leverage the advanced features of the OS9000 switches, including user authorization.

“Students and faculty alike are demanding more diverse applications, which drives up network use and increases our investment in secure high-capacity networks,” said Jin-hak Kim, General manager of Institute of Information and Computer, Hongik University. “We aspire to be at the forefront of services delivery, improving not only the service quality, but also adopting customized network solutions to meet our users needs.

“As colleges actively seek a ubiquitous campus network environment, their need to build networks to support converged services becomes more critical,” said Kwang-jik Kim, head of Alcatel-Lucent’s Enterprise activities in Korea. “Alcatel-Lucent continues to concentrate on providing customized solutions to address the unique communications needs of end-users, while addressing key issues like accessibility, reliability and security.”

The Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess wireless LAN switch 6000 is a central management system that is capable of managing up to 512 access points, and features excellent security and authentication functions.

The OmniSwitch 9800 is an intelligent multi-layered switching platform featuring the industry’s highest capacity equivalent and carrier-class availability. The switch’s Smart Continuous Switching architecture delivers redundant power supplies, switch fabric, management processors, paths in the network, and server load balancing techniques to enable complete switch configuration duplication and restoration.
