“Building a Greener Kansas City” is the theme of the Kansas City Area Development Council’s 2007 Annual Meeting. It’s also a top priority for the Blue Skyways Collaborative’s new partner, the McAninch Corp., with offices in Overland Park, Kan., and Des Moines. McAninch is the first earthmoving and underground utility contractor to qualify for partnership.

Blue Skyways, a voluntary program to reduce air pollution, is joining forces with construction contractor McAninch to help clean up the air in the Kansas City area. The Nov. 9 Development Council’s meeting is an opportunity to highlight McAninch’s positive environmental example to other Kansas City organizations.

Over the last several years, McAninch has replaced older Caterpillar tractors, non-road equipment, and highway vehicles with newer, cleaner models. The corporation now uses ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel with a 7-percent biodiesel blend in all on-road diesel equipment, and uses low-sulfur diesel with a 7-percent blend of biodiesel in its non-road equipment. McAninch introduced an idle-reduction campaign earlier this year encouraging workers to shut off equipment and eliminate emissions during lunch breaks.

EPA Region 7 Administrator John Askew said, “We want to celebrate and recognize McAninch for its efforts to reduce air emissions from its equipment. We’re proud to welcome this new partner to the Blue Skyways Collaborative.”

McAninch’s efforts will lower fuel consumption by 331,000 gallons per year and reduce annual air pollution emissions by the following amounts:

* 206 tons of carbon monoxide
* 200 tons of carbon dioxide
* 54 tons of hydrocarbons
* 58 tons of nitrogen oxides
* More than 24 tons of particulate matter

The Blue Skyways Collaborative works to improve the quality of life in a 10-state area of America’s Heartland by working with partners and participants to leverage resources and share professional and technical expertise. Projects focus on diesel technology innovations in construction, agriculture, and transportation of people and goods.
