Mission conference report meant to send ’fresh winds of change into the lungs of the Anglican Communion’

Next steps for addressing global poverty are highlighted in the newly released final report of the “Toward Effective Anglican Mission” (TEAM) conference held earlier this year in Boksburg, South Africa.

Meeting March 7-14 at the Birchwood Conference Centre near Johannesburg, TEAM gathered more than 400 people from 30 of the Anglican Communion’s 38 provinces to review the church’s response to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The report is an extensive review of the work of the conference and the conclusions reached by the participants.

“This document is designed to serve as strategic framework for action, articulating our mission in the world and the manner in which it will be implemented,” writes Njongonkulu Ndungane, archbishop of Cape Town and Primate of the Anglican Church in Southern Africa, in the report’s foreword. “I hope that as a community we will heed this call to action by blowing fresh winds of change into the lungs of the Anglican Communion.”

The TEAM report will be sent to every Anglican province and extra-provincial church, along with “extended networks and all organs of the Anglican Communion, including Anglican development organizations,” according to the report’s epilogue.

All of the entities receiving the report “are called upon to adopt these recommendations and to own the proceedings of this conference as recommendations made by a representative and diverse gathering of Anglicans from across the communion” and respond officially to the report. Those statements and responses will be posted on the TEAM conference website.

A small task team, consisting of members of the TEAM planning group, is responsible for liaison work with the Anglican Communion Office, Lambeth Palace, and the Lambeth design group to bring to their attention the recommendations of the conference, according to the epilogue.

“This task team will also critically examine the recommendations made in the report and propose a tangible strategy for their implementation with regard to coordination, capacity building, communication, and resource mobilization,” the report said.

The report calls for another meeting in 2014, one year before the deadline for achieving the MDGs, to reflect on the communion’s progress “to plan the way forward, beyond the Millennium Development Goals.”

Included on the 10-member team are the Rev. Canon Brian Grieves of the Anglican Peace and Justice Network and director of the Episcopal Church’s peace and justice ministries, and Alex Baumgarten, International Policy Analyst in The Episcopal Church’s Office of Government Relations.
