Honeywell Supplies Enovate® Blowing Agent to Major Chinese Appliance Manufacturer to Help Make Refrigerators More Energy Efficient

Hisense Kelon first to adopt such insulating technology for producing refrigerators in China

MORRIS TOWNSHIP, N.J. — Honeywell (NYSE: HON) announced today a multi-year agreement with Hisense Kelon, a leading home appliance manufacturer based in Guangdong Province, China, to supply Enovate® blowing agent used in energy-efficient rigid polyurethane foam to insulate refrigerators. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Honeywell’s blowing agent, a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC), is a non-flammable zero ozone-depleting liquid that allows insulating foam to expand and helps provide many of the foam’s key performance characteristics.

“Our new agreement with Hisense Kelon marks the first time that Enovate will be used in refrigerators made in China,” said Ken Gayer, global business director for Honeywell’s foam insulation blowing agents business. “It also demonstrates our commitment and ability to help the world’s leading appliance makers stay ahead of demanding environmental and energy standards.”

Honeywell supplies Enovate to a number of major appliance makers and in August announced that Whirlpool extended its long-term supply agreement. Major appliance makers use rigid polyurethane foam with Honeywell Enovate to insulate refrigerator and freezer cabinets and doors to boost energy efficiency. This insulating foam helps meet strict energy-consumption standards without increasing wall thickness, which would reduce storage capacity or require a larger exterior cabinet design.

“Equipment manufacturers here in China are increasingly turning to proven technologies that will help them meet energy-efficiency and environmental standards in markets they serve around the world,” said David Lu, Asia commercial director for Honeywell’s Fluorine Products business.

“Standards like the U.S. Department of Energy’s ENERGY STAR® program continue to raise the bar for efficiency worldwide.”

The U.S. DOE recently increased the energy-efficiency criteria required for refrigerators to gain the ENERGY STAR rating. Effective April 28, 2008, full-size refrigerators must be a minimum 20 percent more efficient than required by the current federal standard to gain this rating. The previous criteria called for a minimum 15 percent more efficiency.

Industry experts estimate that since 2000 the energy efficiency of an average refrigerator has improved by 35 percent.

Honeywell’s blowing agent technology, used for many years to help appliances achieve ENERGY STAR ratings, is rapidly being adopted to insulate homes, especially walls, basements and attics, and for novel

applications such as solar water heaters in China and hurricane-resistant roofing for commercial buildings like the Louisiana Superdome.
