PORTLAND, OR (September 2007) – LaCie is shipping today a new line of portable storage drives designed exclusively for the company by award-winning industrial designer Sam Hecht. Based on the concept of clean lines, the family features an elegant glossy finish in a thin, lightweight and compact housing. With no feet, switches, or breaks in the finish, the family was created with a focus on pure design to inspire an emotional response.

“I can safely say that this collection of products are the best they can be. I do not say this lightly, but simply stated, we took away everything that was unnecessary, keeping everything that was useful,” said Sam Hecht. “If we are to be honest with ourselves, a hard drive has now become an important tool – not just for business but also for our pleasure and enjoyment of life. And a good tool is never a gadget – a tool is something that is holistic, where each part is dependent on each other and nothing is irrelevant.”

“Sam Hecht is a very talented industrial designer,” said Philippe Spruch, LaCie Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “When we first started to work together, we knew that his idea of design fit well with LaCie’s design philosophy. His approach to understanding the customer’s needs and wants was crucial in delivering products where form and functionally need to meld together seamlessly.”

The end result of Mr. Hecht’s work is a family of hard-drives called the LaCie Little Disks. These storage devices come in 1.8- and 2.5-inch USB 2.0 and FireWire versions with capacities from 60 to 250 gigabytes. Also available is the LaCie Portable DVD±RW Drive with LightScribe, a slim writer to burn professional-looking DVD/CD wherever you want.

Mr. Hecht studied industrial design at the Royal College of Art in London, where he is also now senior tutor. In 2002 he established Industrial Facility with his partner Kim Colin. Mr. Hecht has designed for Epson, Droog, Established & Sons, and Panasonic amongst others. He is also the retained designer to Muji Japan. Following the belief that design is a means of simplifying our lives, Mr. Hecht, and his office, have received over 40 international awards, including three International Forum Gold Awards.
