Harris Corporation Introduces New Mobile Graphics Platform to International Broadcasters at IBC2007

Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS), an international communications and information technology company, today introduced the Inscriber® onTour™ mobile graphics platform to international broadcasters at the IBC convention. The mobile HD/SD graphics system is expected to begin shipping later this year.

Inscriber® onTour™ is an HD/SD-selectable solution providing real-time, 3D broadcast graphics. The system is targeted to live sports production, but is also well-suited for news, entertainment and special events coverage.

“Demand has been growing for live sports production in HD — including extreme and exotic sports — and broadcasters want to cover these events wherever they take place using the same high-quality graphics they produce in studio control rooms,” said Tim Thorsteinson, president of Harris Broadcast Communications. “Even with its compact size, Inscriber® onTour™ provides the uncompromising graphics quality Harris customers have come to expect from Inscriber®.”

Inscriber® onTour™ is a single-channel, Windows® XP-based graphics system developed as the result of a new OEM alliance between Harris and NextComputing, a Nashua, N.H.-based manufacturer of high-performance mobile workstations. By porting Inscriber® G-Scribe™ titling software and RTX™ broadcast graphics software onto NextComputing’s NextDimension Evo HD computing system, onTour™ provides broadcast-quality graphics in a streamlined package. The Evo HD platform includes a 17-inch LCD display (with an option for an additional monitor), FireWire® 400 or 800 connectivity and robust I/O functionality. Two dual-core, second-generation AMD Opteron™ (Socket F) processors allow up to 2.4 GHz of processing speed for applications requiring intensive data throughput — such as high-definition, 3D broadcast graphics.

Inscriber® G-Scribe™ is the core technology powering the popular G-Series™ family of broadcast graphics systems, including the Inscriber® G3™ HD/SD turnkey graphics system. G-Scribe™ software provides a complete suite of design tools, including a character generator, sequencer, effects keyframe animation editor, optional multilayer paint tool, frame grab program and media store database.

Inscriber® RTX™ is an application programming interface (API) that allows broadcasters to develop custom graphics programs tailored expressly for live events. The system is capable of creating complex, multilayered environments consisting of graphics, text, animations, digital video effects, full-motion video and data-driven rolls, tickers and crawls.

“Inscriber® onTour™ fits into a compact carrying case that can be carried onto a plane or to remote production locations,” said Thorsteinson. “If a producer has rented a truck that does not have an Inscriber® graphics system, he can opt to work with Inscriber® by plugging the onTour™ system directly into the truck’s production pipeline. Also, a graphics operator can use onTour™ to create the graphics needed for a live sports broadcast in advance of the event, and then arrive on game day ready to provide those graphics live to air.”

The Inscriber® onTour™ system is part of the channel release offerings in the Harris Broadcast Communications ONE initiative to deliver interoperable workflow solutions that span the entire broadcast delivery chain. The unique Harris approach brings together highly integrated and cost-effective products that are ideal for emerging media business models and for customers upgrading media operations to digital and high-definition services.
