Don’t panic, buy an umbrella and remember the rest of the world

Kristen Boysen, student HR officer for Queen’s Alma Mater Society made it through her first year of university despite the stressors of making the transition from high school to university. Here are some suggestions from her about how to have a successful first year:

Top ten tips for first-year students at Queen’s University

1. Get involved. Whether it is on your new residence floor, during frosh week or by joining a club, you’ll be sure to make like-minded friends.

2. Stay calm. Going from high school to university is a big transition, but don’t panic – everyone around you is going through the same thing, so take a deep breath and stay calm.

3. Find a study group. Talk to people in your classes and you will soon find yourself with a group of friends to ask questions.

4. Don’t stress over a bad grade. They happen and you can improve. It’s part of the learning process.

5. Ask for help. If you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed, talk to your profs, your don or your friends. They will have suggestions and tips on how to relax and get through your problem.

6. Get to know campus. Take a day to wander around campus – either by yourself or with a group of friends. This will help you when you need to find classes.

7. Remember the rest of the world. If things aren’t going your way, don’t forget there is more to life than Queen’s. Try getting off campus for a while: go shopping, take a bike trip, or see the city. Don’t forget your student card gets you on the city buses for free.

8. Exercise and eat healthy! You are on your own and your newfound freedom may fool you into thinking that you are invincible. The Phys-ed Centre is there for a reason. Try to eat healthy and go for walks – you’ll feel and learn better.

9. Buy a good umbrella and warm winter clothing. Kingston winters are very cold, and springtime can get wet. Making sure you are prepared for the rain and snow will help make it easier to get to class and have fun.

10. Stay in touch with friends and family from home. In the excitement of your new life here at universities it can be easy to neglect the people you left behind, but they can be good people to talk to when you are feeling stressed or want to talk about something other than Queen’s.
