Los Angeles—August 16-- In his latest book, Hollywood Be Thy Name: The Idol Makers, noted author/evangelist Ray Comfort explores the reasons why the film industry, which once produced godly films, has become predominantly anti-God. “The average Hollywood production,” Comfort notes, “uses the name of ‘God’ and ‘Jesus Christ’ more than the average sermon.”

Comfort, who co-hosts the award-winning television program “The Way of the Master” with actor Kirk Cameron, examines what happened in the late 1960s that placed the film industry on a fast track of exalting immorality, blasphemy, adultery, and violence over traditional family values. Citing abundant evidence to bolster his case, Comfort asserts that Hollywood’s agenda is “to make Christians look foolish, mock their beliefs, and keep this blind world from trusting in the God of the Bible.”

As a result, Comfort claims, Hollywood is fueling our culture’s hatred of Christianity and turning entire generations against Christ. And that, says Comfort—whose life is dedicated to reaching the lost—should be unacceptable to all Christians.

“What concerns me more than anything else is that Hollywood has suppressed and mocked the gospel of everlasting life,” he writes. “The movie industry could have been used to promote so much good in this world, but it has pushed its evil agenda with a demonic zeal.”

According to Hollywood Be Thy Name, film scripts are not the sole source of the entertainment industry’s negative impact on society. Comfort also skillfully exposes the religious views of Hollywood’s elite, showing how celebrities not only promote immorality but also influence their audiences against biblical Christianity. Yet in the book he offers a strong suggestion on how Christians can stem this tide.

“Godly Jews won’t speak or even write the name of G-d because they consider it to be so holy. Yet we pay Hollywood actors to use it in blasphemy for our entertainment and pleasure,” writes Comfort, challenging readers to consider whether Christians should be entertained by the things that God finds grievous. In calling them to examine their own viewing habits, Comfort gives readers powerful incentive to honor the name of God and equips them to effect positive change in our nation—beginning with their own families
